Common New Born Puppy Health Problems and Diseases

Most newborn puppies are very weak and are vulnerable to health problems. Prevention is always better than cure as recommended; to prevent the opportunity of infections or other health problems, basic to intermediate knowledge about caring for your new born puppy is very important.

Hypothermia:

Parvovirus:

This is a common diseases for a young puppy and a dog. As a dog owner, ensure that your puppy is adequately protected against the deadly Parvovirus disease. Parvovirus is a contagious disease that attacks the lining of the dog or puppy's digestive system. It is usually spread through feces of another infected dog. Parvo can also be carried on kennels, crates and accessories of another dog.

Symptoms include lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, weariness and putrid smelling dog stool. These symptoms have also been linked to high fever which could lead to congestive heart failure.

Make sure that your puppies are vaccinated under a proper program and a health time table. Veterinarians recommend that infected puppies should not be taken to the dog park or even the yard where they can interact with other dogs, until the proper vaccination and injections are administered.

Colostrum:

This is an anti-body that can be given to your new born puppy at approximately 24 hours after birth.

How? Simple, by feeding your puppy the full-bodied first milk of it's mother. This step if available, is critical to your puppy's health and health problems prevention.

Grapes, Nuts, and Your Dogs Health - Foods that Fido should Avoid

"Magoo was a big, playful Labrador retriever who often got himself into sticky situations..."

So begins a story in the latest report from the ASPCA on foods that may be toxic to dogs. It turns out that Magoo got into the pantry and snagged himself about a pound of raisins. He ate the whole thing, of course.

The ASPCA never mentions Magoo's fate. But they do tell us that as little as a handful of raisins can impair a dogs health and has been fatal for some. Ditto for the grape.

Who Knew?

Growing up, I regarded our family dogs as "the first cycle of the dishwasher". They were good about waiting their turn for whatever we left on our plates, and we weren't too concerned about offering them "people food". It never crossed our minds that our dogs health could be affected by a few measly table scraps. What was safe for us, we figured, was safe for our pets.

What's more, whenever I ate grapes, I liked to give one or two to our German Shepherd "Tiffany". The grapes always popped out of her mouth when she tried to bite into them and Tiffany, ever the good sport, refused to give up until she'd squashed each one into submission. It guaranteed at least 60 seconds of harmless fun.

Tiffany was also fond of chewing gum (she chewed it -- wrapper and all -- but didn't swallow it!) We had the sugarless kind, which is often sweetened these days with xylitol.

Little did I know that I might have been poisoning our family pet! (More on xylitol below).

Why are grapes harmful?

As far as grapes and raisins go, no one is sure why they're harmful. It's been confirmed that even grapes grown without fertilizers or pesticides can be toxic to dogs. But not to every dog, and not every time. It's also not known whether small amounts eaten over a long time period could have a cumulative effect.

What we do know is that the end result in nearly all reported cases of grape or raisin toxicity is acute kidney failure. (The term "acute" means that the condition is severe and comes on quickly.) The dog ultimately can't produce urine, which means they can't filter toxins out of their systems -- a process essential to life.

During the twelve-month period in which the effects of grapes were studied, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center handled 140 cases involving one or more dogs. Over a third of the dogs developed symptoms ranging from vomiting to kidney failure, and seven dogs died. The ASPCA based their study on reported cases, so naturally there may be cases where a dogs health is entirely unaffected by eating grapes. But until they know all the facts, the Society advises against feeding pets grapes or raisins in any amount.

An ounce of prevention

So, your dog just scored himself a big box of raisins. What's a pet owner to do?

The first line of defense, if the grapes or raisins were eaten recently, is to induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal (it absorbs toxins in the GI tract). Vomiting is also the first sign that your dog is in trouble, so skip right to the activated charcoal if vomiting has already occurred. (In a pinch you can make your own activated charcoal by charring a piece of toast until it's blackened and crumbles easily.) Then call your vet right away.

The vet will keep your dog on intravenous fluids for at least 48 hours and monitor blood chemistry daily. Normal blood work after 3 days usually means your dog is in the clear.

Keeping a watchful eye out, of course, is the best way to keep your pet out of trouble. Like children, dogs (and other pets) have a knack for getting into mischief when we're not looking.

It's Not Just the Grapes...

There are other foods your dog should be kept away from, and some of them may surprise you.

Here are some other foods that can put a dogs health in harms way:

Chocolate

Who can resist chocolate? Like it your not, your dog.

Chocolate is made with cocoa beans and cocoa beans contain a chemical called Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Different types of chocolate have varying effects on dogs health. Dark chocolate has the largest theobromine, coming in at a whopping 450mg (compared to 1mg for white chocolate). So on Valentine's Day, you're actually being kind to your best buddy if you eat all the chocolates yourself!

Cocoa Mulch

Cocoa bean shells are a by-product of chocolate production (which is how mulch made it into the "foods" category) and are popular as mulch for landscaping. Homeowners like the attractive color and scent, and the fact that the mulch breaks down into an organic fertilizer. However, some dogs like to eat it and it contains Theobromine.

Fatty foods

Fatty foods are hard for a dog to digest and can can overtax the pancreas, leading to pancreatitis. This can threaten your dogs health and is potentially fatal.

Nuts

Macadamia nuts should be avoided. In fact most nuts are not good for a dogs health since their high phosporus content is said to lead to bladder stones.

Mulch

Mulch isn't food, but there's one type tempting enough for dogs to eat. Some dogs are attracted to cocoa mulch, and will eat it in varying quantities. The coca bean shells can contain from 0.2% to 3% theobromine (the toxin ) as compaired to 1-4% in unprocessed beans.

Onions

Onions, especially raw onions, have been shown to trigger hemolytic anemia in dogs. (Stephen J Ettinger, D.V.M and Edward C. Fieldman, D.V.M. 's book: Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine vol. 2 pg 1884.) Stay away from onion powder too.

Potatoes

Potato poisonings among people and dogs are rare but have occurred. The toxin, solanine, is poorly absorbed and is only found in green sprouts (these occur in tubers exposed to sunlight) and green potato skins. This explains why incidents seldom occur. Note that cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for a dogs health, actually quite nutritious and digestible.

Artificial Sweeteners

Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, especially sugarless gum and candies. Ingesting large amounts of products sweetened with xylitol may cause a sudden drop in blood sugar in dogs, resulting depression, loss of coordination, and seizures. According to Dr. Eric K. Dunayer, a consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology for the poison control center, "These signs can develop quite rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product" states Dr. Dunayer, "...therefore, it is important that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately."

Turkey

Turkey skin is currently thought to cause acute pancreatis in dogs, partly due to it's high fat content.

Other foods listed by the ASPCA as harmful:

Alcoholic beverages

Avocado (the only "fatty" member of the vegetable family)

Coffee (all forms of coffee)

Moldy or spoiled foods

Salt

Yeast dough

Garlic

The Bottom Line

Thanks to a more educated public, fewer fatalities from foods like chocolate are being reported these days. But it's important to keep up with what's currently known about foods and their effects on dogs health. Grapes and cocoa mulch, for example, were only discovered very recently to have harmful effects.

What is a Chocolate-Colored Springer Spaniel?

A chocolate springer spaniel is properly called liver and white in color, though many people use the term 'chocolate' at first - they are definitely not for eating. This is one of the basic breed standard colors of the English Springer Spaniel. In England, the other pedigree coloring is black and white. Both the liver and white and the black and white may also have tan markings, which leads to the complete Breed Standard of fours colors (other colors are acceptable in other countries). English Springers with tan markings are known as Liver and White Tricolor or Black and white Tricolor.

The tan markings may be on the ends of the feathering, on the eyebrows and cheeks, the tail and the ticking on the legs. The feathering is the wispy hair found on the chest and belly, the rear of the legs, on the underside of the tail and between the toes. The 'ticking' is best described as small spots of colour blended with the background colour. In England, pure bred dogs without any ticking are rare.

The American breed standards for the English Springer are slightly different:

* Black or liver with white markings
* Predominantly white with black or liver markings
* Blue or liver roan
* Tricolor - black and white or liver and white with tan markings

Tan markings are usually located as in the Breed Standard for England. Roan is usually defined as an evenly distributed mixture of white and colored hairs that does not grey or fade as the animal gets older.

Coloring is also important in the nose of the springer. The nose should be fully pigmented, either liver or black to match the coat. No pink areas are permissible - this would a fault in a show-dog. Under the Breed Standard in England, noses should only be black.

Springers have very appealing eyes, and the coloring of these is important in the Breed Standard. The irises should harmonise with the colour of the coat - for a liver and white coat they should be dark hazel (the deeper the color the better), and black or deep brown for black and white dogs. Eyerims should be fully pigmented and match the color of the coat. Yellow or brassy eyes are not desirable. For dogs under the Breed Standard in England, irises should be black or almost black for the dog with a black and white coat; hazel for a liver and white coat.

In comparison, the Welsh Springer Spaniel has only one accepted coloring, that of red and white. Indeed, coloring is one of the principal differences between English and Welsh Springers (physical conformation being the other main distinguishing feature). The red is a rich and golden gingery color, quite different to the liver and white of the English Springer. So, 'chocolate' never applies to a Welsh Springer. Any pattern of coloring is acceptable and any white areas may have red ticking.

Eyes should be brown, though yellow eyes do sometimes appear and would be penalised in a show-ring. Noses may be black or brown in the Welsh Springer, and as with the English Springer, any pink on the nose is a show-fault in the USA.

So, there you have it. A chocolate springer spaniel is definitely not for eating!

Micro Pigs - How to Care For Your New Micro Pigs

Micro Pigs make fantastic pets if looked after well, you should always be sure this is the pet for you. You can never ask too many questions. They are intelligent, friendly and can even be taught tricks like dogs.

Micro pigs should be bought in pairs, unless you have a dog or other animal living in your home, a micro pig will be miserable if alone without a mate (must be another pet if not buying a pair). This is not us trying to sell more than one pig as we do not need to, demand is so high for them, it is genuinely in the best interest of the pig to be kept in pairs. Remember they are not pets for children they will be friendly with children but like any animal bought into the home if you have young children that may want to climb all over the pig it could cause the pig to get grumpy, so adult supervision is a must.

You need a carrier with straw in the bottom, if you prefer you can put a blanket in the bottom of the carrier. If it's a long journey home provide water for your micro pig, your baby will not need food until you get home. Remember your new baby will be tiny.

You should confine your new micro pig/pigs to a smallish area whilst they get used to new surroundings and people, gradually you can allow them more roaming (normally 2-3 days).

You should ensure that your baby pig is kept warm and has no draughts, plenty of straw this is including if your baby is going in an outside shed etc, a snuggle safe might be an idea (it heats in the microwave and stays warm for about 8 hours)

We feed all our micro pigs and piglets on sow nuts for pigs, these contain all the essential vitamins and minerals to keep your new baby healthy, they are also non-fattening, we will of course be providing you with a 25 kilo bag this will see you through around 3-4 weeks. Ask your breeder to recommend places to buy sow nuts. They will last around 3-4 weeks so you will need to keep them fresh.

To start with a handful of sow nuts will be sufficient a baby micro pig does not need a lot of food, as he/she grows older they will eat around half a dog bowl of the sow nuts, they only need feeding once per day and morning is best. You can give your pig small treats but don't overdo it and try and stick to low fat treats. Do not feed your pig any meat products, anything with high salt content. For example you can give your new piglet fruit, bread, and vegetables. Pigs like dogs will respond well to food given as a reward. Please do not over feed your baby micro pig, they will get fat!

Your new micro piglet should have fresh water available to him/her at all times. We are currently using automatic water feeders and they work very well for our micro piggies.

How to Protect Baby Birds From Outdoor Cats?

I saw two little birds in the nest near my house which is unprotected without their parents near them. While I was looking at them I realized that the mom bird was watching me, just to make sure I wasn't getting to close to her babies. While she was observing me, she was looking for food to give to them. She approached the nest and fed her babies. She was trying to protect them from predators.

Later in the day I went back to check if they were ok. I noticed that one little bird was dead on the floor. The neighbor's cat reached the nest and caught one of the birds. I was really sad when I saw the baby bird dead on the floor. I looked at the mom bird and I noticed that she was more alert to protect the only surviving bird. She was attacking any animal that was trying to approach the nest including Dive-bombing at me a couple of times.

I started to think what I could do to help her protect the only surviving bird. I know if I touch the baby or the nest she will smell my odor and she will reject the baby and will not come back to the nest. (That's not true). I can touch the nest and the birds without problems. Birds do not recognize their young by smell, but by their appearance and by their sound. They will continue to feed their babies, even after someone touched the little birds.

In that moment I had so many questions on my mind. Should I take the baby bird home? It wouldn't be a good idea to move the birds from the nest. Birds have a better chance of surviving under its own parents' care than under human care with the exception of trained experts. Never take them home.

Should I feed the baby bird? Feeding the baby bird can be dangerous and can cause the death of the bird. Baby birds need a special diet high in protein to help them grow quickly.

Should I move the nest from the tree? Leave the nest and the bird where you found them because wild animals must remain in the wild in order to survive, unless the bird is injured or abandoned by the mother. In this case I recommend you to contact a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. They have the knowledge in how to take care of the birds in a proper way than regular people.

After finding out all this information I learned that I had to leave the baby bird in the nest. The cat was still there stocking the nest. My neighbor gave me some suggestions.

A temporary solution to this problem would be to use an automatic sprinkler near the tree. This would scare the cat and keep it away for awhile. Another solution my neighbor suggested was to build an enclosure near the tree. One of the best solutions that the neighbor and I found was to keep the cat indoors as long as we could. So that was what the neighbor and I did.

Dog Bad Breath - No More Kisses

It makes it hard to get close to your dog; doggy kisses are out of the question, let alone snuggling up at night with your dog that you love so much. After all, your dog would love you just as much if you had bad breath. When our dog has dog bad breath we want to run to the store and buy dog breath mints, but please don't, save your money: bad dog breath is a warning sign that there may be something wrong.

Dog bad breath can be caused by a number of things. It could be as simple as something nasty that your dog ate. Dogs have been known to roll around in, play with and eat some pretty gross things.

However, bad dog breath is often a symptom of a more serious problem. Dogs at any age over two years old, can suffer from periodontal disease which is bad teeth, and gingivitis which is an infection of the gums. In a healthy dog the gums are a pinkish color and the breath is not offensive. In the early stages of gingivitis you will notice brownish colored deposits on the back of your dog's teeth and may also notice a thin red line running along the gums. Inflammation of the gums can destroy that support system that locks the bones and the teeth. This makes it difficult for your dog to chew and this makes the problem even worse. Left unchecked it promotes tooth decay and produces bacteria that enters the dog's bloodstream and can cause damage to your dog's vital organs, like the heart, kidneys and liver.

Veterinarians report that many dogs by age nine or ten will have significant tooth decay, so get your dogs teeth cleaned annually to remove excess tartar. Dog bad breath that develops from gingivitis or periodontal infection; if caught early can usually be resolved with a good cleaning and the vet can apply a special antibiotic gel under the gums where the bacteria is breeding. After the antibiotic gel solidifies, it dissolves over a two week period allowing the antibiotics to release into the dogs gums. Depending on the advancement of the disease, it may take several treatments. Left untreated, as the dog gets older, there is not much hope of getting your dog's mouth back to normal. Advanced periodontal disease causes your dogs teeth to get loose and eventually fall out; not to mention that this is very painful for your dog. At this point your dogs bad breath is very foul and fixing the problem will probably mean surgery for extractions. This option is expensive so you would be wise to treat it early. A healthy mouth will help your dog to live a longer and have a happier life.

Now, you've checked your dog's teeth, or had them cleaned recently, and all looks well: now what?

Often bad dog breath can be related to stomach and digestive issues. The mouth odor may be abnormal bacteria resulting from food not being adequately digested. Symptoms could include gas, diarrhea and constipation. Dogs need enzymes and beneficial bacteria that help him to digest the food he eats. Upgrade your dog to a premium dog food, give him rawhide chews, large dog biscuits and chew toys. I like to give my dogs raw meats and safe bones. Chewing is good for your dog and will not only help resolve dog bad breath, but will improve his overall health.
